"I have been taking The Other Option's Digestive Remedy for about 6 months now after reading your advert in the Odyssey. I started off by taking the chronic dosage and felt relief almost immediately. I always suffered from bloating, flatulence and reflux. I am now on the maintenance dosage 1 teaspoon per day and can honestly say I do not have the above problems anymore - I feel wonderful thanks to Digestive Remedy."

gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

GERD is a condition where gastric juices travel back from the stomach into the oesophagus (gullet or swallowing tube). If you suffer from GERD the gastric juices from your stomach "flow back" into your oesophagus, causing discomfort and pain.

What causes GERD? When food cannot digest it ferments in the stomach forming gasses and alcohols, the gas build-up creates pressure forcing digestive juices to reflux and this results in the pain and discomfort known as GERD. Chronic GERD can eventually cause mechanical damage such as hiatus hernia or Barrett's Oesophagus. Factors such as stress and low stomach acid can inhibit digestion. Many people are under the misconception that they are over producing stomach acid and therefore resort to using antacids and or acid blockers which only treat the short term symptoms and often exaggerate the cause. Please see "How undigested food affects the stomach and digestive system" for more details about stomach acid and digestion. Other causes of GERD are a defective lower oesophageal sphincter muscle, dietlifestyle, insufficient nutrients and pregnancy.

GERD SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

GERD symptoms may vary from person to person. Common symptoms associated with GERD are chest pain which can feel like 'heartburn' which is a burning sensation or pain behind the breastbone or in the pit of the stomach that can extend all the way up to the throat, nausea, regurgitation of a bitter taste or fluid, sensitive teeth and sore throat.
